Applications are open for the National Institute of Teaching’s Excellence in Reception Teaching Programme. New for 2026, this fully funded development opportunity is designed for both new and experienced reception teachers who want to refine their practice and improve outcomes for every child, helping build strong foundations from the very start of a child’s school journey.
Split across two terms, the programme is designed to fit around the demands of teaching, with flexible, manageable content delivered through expert-led sessions, bitesize research summaries, practical, classroom-focused guidance, opportunities for reflection and application and Q&A sessions with specialists. All learning is designed to be completed within dedicated CPD time, with a clear focus on immediate classroom impact.
Reception is a critical year in a child’s education. The quality of teaching, provision and interactions at this stage has a lasting impact on attainment, confidence and long-term outcomes. By investing in reception teaching, schools can improve school readiness, close gaps earlier, and set pupils up for success across the curriculum.
Please note that the application journey for this programme differs from the usual NIoT process. The Department for Education is managing all expressions of interest and applications centrally. The NioT, in partnership with DRET Teaching School Hub are responsible for promoting the programme and supporting prospective participants, but all applications will take place via the DfE's online portal. All marketing activity will direct prospective participants to the DfE application portal, where they will complete the application process and select the NIoT as their chosen provider.
You can register your interest with the DfE now to be alerted when applications open in July.
The programme is fully funded and runs for two terms from October 2026 to February 2027 - the programme is delivered nationally; places are limited and will be awarded on a first come first served basis. We therefore encourage colleagues to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
